I think any time you include kids as protagonists the tone lightens. Pay attention to that escalating situation, because the payoff is probably the creepiest part of the film, although there are also some spooky moments courtesy of a Burmese maid whose fate is sealed early in the film not much of a spoiler there since it's in the trailer.
Originally I thought I would hate this movie because of the subtitles but I quickly fell in love with the characters subtjtle the story.
